topquark22 posted a photo: Americium Most smoke detectors use a small pellet of americium-241 (atomic number 95), used to ionize the air to detect smoke particles.

Americium-241 is a synthetic, radioactive heavy isotope with a half-life of 432.2 years. It decays via alpha emission and spontaneous fission. This means that, after 25 years, about 4% of the original americium in your smoke detector has transmuted into neptunium-237 and other lighter elements.

DRSB-88 Geiger Counter On Betafite Source

Rating: 0.0/5 (0 votes cast)

This is the DRSB-88 on a Betafite check source, which I bought from www.anythingradioactive.com It isn't quite as powerful as the Americium 241 source, but it still registers some counts.

DRSB-88 Geiger Counter On A Smoke Detector Source

Rating: 0.0/5 (0 votes cast)

This is my Russian DRSB-88 geiger counter, measuring the radiation from a smoke detector source. If you didn't already know, smoke detectors contain a small piece of Americium 241, which is not dangerous, but will produce nice clicks on a geiger counter. Check out my other geiger counter videos.

Americium is a synthetic element that has the symbol Am and atomic number 95. A radioactive metallic element, americium is an actinide that was obtained in 1944 by Glenn T. Seaborg who was bombarding plutonium with neutrons and was the fourth transuranic element to be discovered. It was named for the Americas, by analogy with europium. Americium is widely used in commercial ionization-chamber smoke detectors as well as in neutron sources and industrial gauges.

Pure americium has a silvery and white luster. At room temperatures it slowly tarnishes in dry air. It is more silvery than plutonium or neptunium and apparently more malleable than neptunium or uranium. Alpha emission from 241Am is approximately three times that of radium. Gram quantities of 241Am emit intense gamma rays which creates a serious exposure problem for anyone handling the element.

Americium is also fissile; the critical mass for an unreflected sphere of 241Am is approximately 60 kilograms. It is unlikely that Americium would be used as a weapons material, as its minimum critical mass is considerably larger than that of more readily obtained plutonium or uranium isotopes.
